Names of God: Banner

YAHWEH-NISSI [ yah-way-nee-see ] “The Lord our banner” Exodus 17:15
by Nick Laninga

The children of Israel had just left the Wilderness of Sin, and by the Lord’s command camped in Rephidim; but there was no water there for the people to drink. Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, “give us water to drink”. The familiar why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children—with thirst? Moses cries out to the Lord, saying “ What shall I do with this people? They are ready to stone me! It is not Moses who is being put on trial, but God. God is being accused of abandoning Israel to die in the desert. How does God respond? Does He strike them dead? No He calls a trial where He stands before the people as the accused, standing on the rock. God is called the “Rock” and Moses is called to lift his rod of Judgement and strikes the rock that symbolizes God. God is not guilty, but he bears the judgement. This is a type of Christ, the incarnate Son of God, who endured the punishment for our sin. [I Cor.10:4] Water- life giving water flowed. Mercy flowed. Just as mercy and life flowed from Christ’s pierced side on the cross. John 19:34; cf.7:38.

As we continue the account in verse 8 we see the Amalekites [descendants of Esau] attacking picking off the weak and straggling ones of Israel. Moses called Joshua to “choose some men to go out, fight with Amalek. “Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill WITH THE ROD OF GOD in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses says and fights with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. While Moses held up his arms with the ROD OF GOD lifted up the Israelites were winning, but when his arms dropped the Amalekites gained the battle, finally with Aaron and Hur holding Moses’ arm up the Israelites triumphed. God tells Moses to record the event a memorial recounted in the hearing of Joshua that “ I will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. And Moses built an alter and called its name, THE-LORD-IS-MY-BANNER.

Farther study shows that the Hebrew word translated “banner” underlies “staff” rod, in verse 9 and is used for “pole” on which the bronze serpent was later placed { Numbers 21:8} Since “banner” suggests cloth to us, this connection is lost. A spear could serve as a standard in battle, with or without bits of cloth tied to it. Moses’ staff is the ensign to which Joshua’s army could look and that symbolized God’s saving power. Moses declares that God Himself is the Standard the Ensign of His people. The Lord went before His People, protecting them and triumphing over their enemies and so it is for us today.

In the real spiritual battles we face/fight every day let’s remember YAHWEH NISSI, the LORD is our banner.

LET US LIFT THE STANDARD OF THE LORD HIGH AND RALLY FOR HIM.

PSALM 9:10. AND THOSE WHO KNOW YOUR NAME WILL PUT THEIR TRUST IN YOU; FOR YOU, LORD, HAVE NOT FORSAKEN THOSE WHO SEEK YOU!!!

Blessings, the Laninga’s
