I Have Called You Friends

The punishment that brought us peace was upon him.

Isaiah 53:5

Peace became costly the day we disobeyed our maker. God instituted the sacrificial system in-part as a grisly display of the price of paying for our disobedience.

Psalm 49 puts it this way:
“Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life,
for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, ”

The price that “no man” could pay was payed by the God-man. He accepted our debt, bore our disobedience, and carried it away.

The debt of gratitude we owe to him is far to great to measure. If we truly believe that he has secured our freedom by taking our sin, then we will surely be his obedient slaves and faithful subjects. But that is just the beginning of the wonder of the Gospel. These truths should be peace enough, but Jesus goes beyond imagination and perhaps even reason and says this,

“I have called you friends.”
