For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
The Great Love
The maker, the causeless cause, the one who holds all things together, the one who spoke into darkness and made light, the judge, jury and executioner came upon us in a field.
We were a bastard child, cast away and wallowing in our own blood. He said to us, “Live!” And we could not but obey. He caused us to prosper, and made us beautiful because of his great love.
Beholding this beauty that had been given to us, we trusted it and clutching it with white knuckled fury, we cast off the giver. We did horrible things, our pallor changed, and our treachery became legendary. Death came to us swiftly, and peace was only a word of greeting. Hope departed our land, and many weary years passed waiting for a faintly remembered promise.
Then he came. True to our mother, we again clutched his gifts of wood and iron and murdered him in hopes to hide our shame and find our long-lost beauty.
But he defeated death and came back. It was then that some of us came to see his great love, for the giver was the gift and when we raised him up on a hill that day, he was taking our darkness, blood and treachery so that we could “Live!”
